Strange creatures and bizarre occurrences terrorize the inhabitants of the Earth colony of Terra Alpha.  When the Doctor arrives to investigate he discovers a tyrannical ruler, Helen A, who requires her subjects to be happy-or be executed.  A sadistic death squad enforces her edict.  Before the Doctor can discover the dark secret behind her malevolent regime, he must face fearsome threats from the most unlikely sources: The dictator’s savage pet, Fifi, and her chief confectioner, the Kandy Man.   One of the highlight productions of the 25th anniversary season, this episode is among the Doctor’s most intriguing and satirical adventures.

Additional Notes
happiness_b.jpg (11366 bytes)
  • "The Happiness Patrol" is the second story in the 25th anniversary of Doctor Who.
  • Although appearing as the second story of the season, it was actually recorded last.  A shift in the start of the season caused the swapping of "Happiness Patrol" with "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy" for transmission order.
  • Arguably one of the most bizarre stories in the history of Doctor Who, "The Happiness Patrol" works on many levels and has generated a large volume of debate on the Internet.
  • Watch closely for the psychotic villain made almost entirely out of sweets.  The Kandyman is both an amusing and a disturbing villain which makes for an interesting mix of conflicting emotions (which can't be said all that often of Doctor Who villains).  :)
  • One candy company even complained of trademark infringement with their own "candyman" called Bertie Basset.
  • This story began with the title "The Happiness Patrol" until it was changed to "The Crooked Smile."  It was eventually changed back to its original title once production began.
  • Many scenes were edited out due to an overrun in time including one humorous scene where the Kandyman cuts off one of his fingers by mistake only to casually stick it back on again.
