Doctor Who, Sarah and Harry are beckoned to Earth by the Brigadier to investigate recent attacks on oil rigs by a vicious creature that leaves giant teeth marks on the wreckage it cr4eates. The Doctor and his colleagues find a link between these attacks and the Lock Ness monster, which really does exist-- and is the murderous tool of the evil alien Zygons.  The trick is to determine which of their apparent allies are good, and which are shape shifting Zygons intent on overpowering the planet!

Additional Notes
zygons_c.jpg (10098 bytes)
  • Harry Sullivan, companion to the 4th Doctor, departs at the end of this story.
  • Originally intended to be the final story of season 12, "Terror of the Zygons" is in many ways the last of the U.N.I.T. based adventures.  However, from time to time members of U.N.I.T. do reappear in future stories such as "The Android Invasion," "Mawdryn Undead," and "Battlefield."
  • "Terror of the Zygons" was originally released in an edited "movie" (or Omnibus) format.  This means that individual episodes have been cut and pasted together into one viewing.  The BBC released Doctor Who videos like this until the early 90's.  Since then they have gone back and issued "re-releases" of virtually all of their omnibus versions.   Unfortunately, the U.S. (i.e. CBS/Fox at first, and then later Warner Home Video) hasn't been eager to follow suite, as they have only done two re-releases "The Brain of Morbius" back in 1997 and  "Terror of the Zygons" in 2000.  Additionally, many stories first released in the late 80's and early 90's are seeing re-release on DVD.  Unedited titles such as "Spearhead from Space," "The Ark in Space" and "Robots of Death" are all available now in their unedited formats.
  • The U.K. re-released "Terror of the Zygons" in its unedited episodic format in August of 1999.
  • In a rare move, North American fans were treated to the unedited episode re-release in 2000.  This had only been done once before for the story "The Brain of Morbius."  Any other unedited re-releases have been in the DVD format instead of VHS.
  • Included at the beginning of the tape is a rare short segment used in the show "Disney Time."  In the clip, Tom Baker (Doctor #4) can be seen reading a note from the Brigadier.  The Doctor sets off for his TARDIS and invites everyone at home to watch the new adventure.
  • John Woodnutt plays the dual roles of both the Duke of Forgil and Commander Broton in this story.  Woodnutt has appeared frequently in Doctor Who.  Woodnutt's first role in Doctor Who was that of Hibbert in Pertwee's introductory story "Spearhead from Space."  His next appearance on the show would be that of the Draconian Emperor in "Frontier in Space."  After "Terror of the Zygons" he made one final appearance as counselor Seron in Tom Baker's penultimate adventure "The Keeper of Traken."
