The Doctor arrives on a new planet and befriends Leela, a primitive savage armed with a knife, who is inclined to stab first and ask questions later.  Leela has been turned out of her tribe into the jungle realm of deadly invisible monsters.  The Doctor learns her people, the Sevateem, are at the mercy of their cruel God, Xoanon.  Their enemies, the Tesh, live in a space ship hidden behind a time barrier, created and controlled by Xoanon, the giant computer that controls everything on the planet.  The Doctor is puzzled when the Sevateem call him "The Evil One," and even more puzzled when he discovers a giant carved idol resembling him.  But the answers come clear when he finds himself face to face with . . . himself.

Additional Notes

faceevil_c.jpg (9386 bytes)

  • "The Face of Evil" introduces a new and popular companion, the warrior Leela.  She would finally leave at the end of the next season in the story "The Invasion of Time."

  • At the beginning of this video release is a clip from a 1977 show called " The Multi-Colored Swap Shop" and features an interview with Louise Jameson shortly after her debut on Dr. Who.

  • Watch for one of the all time best cliffhangers at the end of episode 3, with the crazed Xoanon (sporting the face of the good Doctor himself) screaming with a child's voice "Who am I?"

  • It is never established exactly when the Doctor made his first appearance on the planet that led to all of the events shown in this story.

  • To make Louise Jameson (Leela) appear more "savage" she was given brown tinted contacts to wear over her blue eyes.  These contacts were uncomfortable and eventually an explanation was created in "Horror of Fang Rock" to explain her eyes changing from brown to blue.

  • Early makeup tests included darkening Jameson's skin considerably.  Quite a few early publicity stills were taken with this heavy makeup on.  In the end, it was not used for this story or any other subsequent one.
