Additional Notes
  • This is David Tennant's third series as Doctor Who.

  • Catherine Tate returns to the TARDIS in the role of Donna Noble, last seen in the 2006 Christmas special "The Runaway Bride".

  • Included in this release are all 13 episodes from the fourth series, along with the Christmas special "Voyage of the Damned".

  • A classic series villain returning this season are the Sontarans.  They first debuted in 1974 with the third Doctor (Jon Pertwee), appeared twice with the fourth Doctor (Tom Baker), and finally appearing against the sixth Doctor (Colin Baker).

  • The Sontarans weren't the only returning villain.  The character of Davros was re-introduced during the 4th series finale.

  • Also making return appearances are characters such as Martha Jones, Captain Jack Harkness, Sarah Jane Smith, Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith, and Rose Tyler.

  • U.N.I.T. returns this season in a more substantial role, spanning the two part story "The Sontaran Stratagem"/"The Poison Sky".

Actor Bernard Cribbins was a late addition to the semi-regular cast this season.  Cribbins plays Wilf Noble, Donna's grandfather.  The actor was cast soon after it became apparent that the actor playing Donna's father (Howard Attfield) was struggling with health issues.  Attfield filmed his scenes for the first story of the season, "Partners in Crime", but sadly passed away shortly afterwards.  Cribbins' character essentially takes the place intended for the part of Donna's father.

  • Following the format of the previous three seasons, there are essentially, 7 single episode stories and 3 two episode stories ("The Sontaran Stratagem"/"The Poison Sky", "Silence in the Library"/"Forest of the Dead", and the series finale "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End").

  • Just as with the first three series, the fourth has met with both critical acclaim as well as strong ratings in the U.K.

  • Series 4 continued to make strong strides in North America too, debuting only a few short weeks after the U.K. began transmission.

  • The series will be taking a sort of breather in 2009, with only a handful of specials planned for the year.  The next complete 13 episode season will begin again in 2010.

  • This will be the final full season of executive producer and head writer, Russell T. Davies - a man credited with bringing Doctor Who back onto the television screen after a 16 year absence.  He will remain for the duration of the 2009 specials.  Acclaimed writer Steven Moffat will be taking over the role of executive producer in Davies place.

  • Also departing at the end of the 2009 specials is actor David Tennant, leaving the role of the Doctor after three full seasons, plus many specials.  Change is in the wind.
