DVD Features

Disc One

2005 Christmas Special
& Episode 1

The Christmas Invasion
New Earth

Outtakes: As the name suggests, bloopers are included here from the second series.  Some fun moments.

Deleted Scenes:

A healthy dose of deleted scenes spanning the entire second series and shown in chronological order.  Some are minor deletions, while a few contain more significant plot twists.  There are over 20 scenes included and runs for over 15 minutes.

Billie Piper's Video Diaries:

A brief video diary with actress Billie Piper (Rose) shot during the course of filming the second series.  Some behind the scenes moments give a real sense of the scale that making this series entailed.

"Children In Need" Special:

The "Children In Need" special picks up immediately where the previous episode "The Parting of the Ways" leaves off - with the newly regenerated Doctor and Rose in the TARDIS.  This seven minute special was shown in November of 2005 as part of the BBC's annual charity drive.  One small note - the Region 2 (U.K.) version has a minor variation in sound design due to an earlier edit being accidentally used here.  For the sadder fans out there the difference is the cloister bell actually sounds in the Region 1 version, whereas it does not in the Region 2 one.

David Tennant's Video Diaries:

A remarkably candid and personal documentation of Tennant's first year as the Doctor.  This featurette lasts over 80 minutes and covers almost every story from the second series.

Additional Notes
  • Coming off of a critically acclaimed first season "comeback" the lead role is taken up this season by actor David Tennant.

  • Along with Rose as a companion, long time recurring character Mickey Smith plays a pivotal role in this season.

  • Included in this release are all 13 episodes from the second series, along with the Christmas special entitled "The Christmas Invasion."

  • Also included in the set is a short 5 minute segment filmed specially for the annual Children in Need appeal.  This segment takes place immediately after the Doctor's regeneration and bridges the gap between the last episode from the previous series ("The Parting of the Ways") and the Christmas special ("The Christmas Invasion").

  • Another popular adversary from the original series returns - the Cybermen.

  • Also returning from the original series is long time companion Sarah Jane Smith (played by Elisabeth Sladen) and K-9 (voiced by actor John Leeson).  Both are featured in the episode "School Reunion."

  • The last few moments of the final episode in this series link to the upcoming Christmas 2006 episode entitled "The Runaway Bride."  This episode would likely comprise the beginning of a third series box set.

  • The format of this new series is somewhat different from the original (or "classic" series).  Episodes are now approximately 45 minutes and usually are self contained stories - i.e. each story has a resolution by the end of the episode.

  • Just as in the last season, there were essentially, 7 single episode stories and 3 two episode stories ("The Rise of the Cybermen"/"The Age of Steel", "The Impossible Planet"/"The Satan Pit", and the series finale "Army of Ghosts"/"Doomsday").

  • Just as with the first series, the second has met with both critical acclaim as well as strong ratings in the U.K.

  • While there is much that is new about this series, the same spirit that was apparent in the original series is very much alive here too.

  • In a reversal from last year where the box set for the first series was released in Canada before the U.S., this year it is the U.S.'s turn to see the release first (January 16, 2007) while Canada will get their official release several weeks later (February 6, 2007).  As was the case last year, this comes down to first transmission issues as the U.S. will have finished screening these episodes earlier than Canada will.

Highlight the text below for spoiler information

  • Actress Billie Piper (Rose) opted to leave at the end of the second series, and exits on a very dramatic note in the two part finale.

  • Recurring characters such as Mickey and Jackie Tyler also depart as a consequence.
