Materializing on an Edwardian sailing yacht, the Doctor and his companions find themselves caught up in a mysterious and deadly race.  The prize is Enlightenment - the wisdom to find your heart's desire - and it quickly becomes clear that one of the crews will let nothing and no one stop them claiming victory.  As the Black Guardian pressures Turlough to complete his side of their murderous pact, it seems that the Doctor may not survive to cross the finish line.

Additional Notes
  • "Enlightenment" is the fifth story of the 20th anniversary season of Doctor Who.  Each story within this season features the return of one of the Doctor's former adversaries.

  • This adventure is the final chapter in a trilogy of stories centering around the Black Guardian's attempts to destroy the Doctor as revenge for thwarting his plans to control the Key to Time.  The first story in this trilogy was "Mawdryn Undead" while the middle part was "Terminus."

  • "Enlightenment" along with the rest of season 20, almost didn't get made due to the threat of an impending strike at the BBC.

  • This story also sees the return of the White Guardian, last seen at the beginning of the Key to Time opener "The Ribos Operation."  Actor Cyril Luckham reprises his role as the White Guardian.

  • It also sees the return of the Black Guardian, who first appeared in "The Armageddon Factor," the final chapter in the Key to Time saga.  Actor Valentine Dyall once again assumes the role of the Black Guardian.

  • In the early stages of writing, this story was titled "The Enlighteners."
  • As with all of the DVD releases to date, the Doctor Who Restoration Team did extensive work on this story.  More information on the restoration of this story can be read at their website HERE.
