DVD Features

Disc One
All 6 surviving episodes from Patrick Troughton's first season as Doctor Who.

  • "The Macra Terror" Surviving Footage:

Before being screened in countries like Australia and New Zealand, Doctor Who would be screened by censors and objectionable material would be removed.  In an ironic twist, the cut scenes are the only remaining footage from some of these stories.  Here the bits of footage come from episodes 2 and 3 including several shots of the Macra terrorizing Ben and Polly.

  • The Last Dalek:

Originally included in a somewhat lower quality form in the VHS release of "The Missing Years" and then later again in a better quality copy for the DVD release of "Tomb of the Cybermen" this footage was taken during the filming of the model effects shots for "Evil of the Daleks."  This time around the footage is presented with a 10 minute 'mini-commentary' by the story's effects designers, Peter Day and Michealjohn Harris.  This featurette was also included on the Troughton release "The Seeds of Death."

  • "The Underwater Menace" Surviving Footage:

Surviving clips compliments of Australian censors.  Some great moments of Polly undergoing a procedure to turn her into a fish from episodes 1 and 2 as well as Zaroff's final moments from episode 4.

  • "The Highlanders" Surviving Footage:

Included is a small snippet of the beginning of the opening scene of the Doctor exiting the TARDIS as well as several censor cuts during key battles.  All clips come from episode 1.

  • Troughton Era 8mm Off-Screen Footage:

Short clips taken by a fan who pointed his 8mm camera at the TV screen and filmed short segments.  Little did this person realize that one day his footage would be all that survived from several stories.  Included are some clips from episodes 1 and 2 of  "Power of the Daleks," episode 3 of "The Macra Terror" and episode 2 of "The Faceless Ones."

  • "The Power of the Daleks"

Several options are available here for the only existing clips from Patrick Troughton's first story.  .  A recently discovered trailer (found at the end of a different program) for episode 1 of this story is included.  The other source of footage comes from short film sequeces (all of which involve Daleks) from episodes 4, 5 and 6.

  • Who's Who:
A feature unique to the North American DVD releases.  It lists short biographical information on many of the actors involved in the multiple stories presented here.

  • Complete Audio Soundtrack of episodes 1 & 3 of "The Moonbase" :

While many episodes of Doctor Who were destroyed, audio recordings made during their original transmission have survived.  Presented here are the 2 "missing" episodes from "The Moonbase."  They are accessible from the episode selection menu and are also included in the "play all" selection.

  • Commentary:
Audio commentaries were recorded for one episode on this disc.

"The Evil of the Daleks" episode 2 - Deborah Watling (Victoria)

Long time Who fan and producer of the Big Finish radio plays, Gary Russell serves as moderator.  There are additional commentaries on the second disc.

Disc Two
6 more episodes from Patrick Troughton's final two seasons as Doctor Who.

  • "The Web of Fear" Surviving Clips:

A collection of nice clips whose existence can be credited to New Zealand censors.  They show several scenes from episodes 2, 4 and 5 and involve Yetis attacking soldiers, the Doctor's discovery of a web covered corpse, and Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart's battle with the Yeti.  This same footage was included in the earlier release of "The Seeds of Death."

  • "The Abominable Snowmen"

Surviving clips filmed on location.  They mostly show Yeti in various scenes and were used as film inserts for episode 4 of this story.  Additionally, silent, 8mm color footage of the location filming is also included here.

  • "The Wheel in Space" Surviving Clips:

Surviving clips from episodes 4 and 5 thanks to New Zealand censors.  Most of these scenes involve various violent fights occurring between "cybernized" humans and the space station crew.

  • "The Space Pirates" Film Inserts and Trims:

Surviving clips of film inserts used in the making of this story (mainly from episodes 1 and 2).

  • The Missing Years:

An updated and expanded version of the original VHS release that chronicles the quest for the missing episodes and some of their recoveries (including a sizable 5 minute clip from the lost Hartnell story "Galaxy 4."  The original documentary is presented with additional material included at the end of the program.

  • "Fury from the Deep"

The scenes presented here come from a variety of sources.  One source is from Australian censors, another is some studio footage of alternative takes during the climatic battle in episode 6, while other footage comes from a behind the scenes camera filming (in color) another sequence involving invading Sea Weed.  The various clips come from episodes 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6.  The use of studio footage and the alternate takes matched up with the audio recordings of the actual episode create a very satisfying clip for episode 6 showing fans what the final climatic battle looked like.

  • Audio Options:
Audio commentaries were recorded for the following episodes...

"The Abominable Snowmen" episode 2 - Deborah Watling (Victoria)

"The Web of Fear" episode 1 - Derrick Sherwin (script editor).

"The Wheel in Space" episode 6 - Derrick Sherwin (script editor) and Tristan de Vere Cole (director).

Long time Who fan and producer of the Big Finish radio plays, Gary Russell serves as moderator for all 3 episodes.  There is a commentary for one other episode on the first disc.

  • Easter Eggs:
No easter egg is planned for the second disc.  There is an egg on the first disc.  For a full list of known Easter Eggs and screen grabs of them click HERE.

Additional Notes
  • Of particular note is the fact that this DVD title will see the release of the newly discovered trailer for episode 1 of "The Power of the Daleks" and the behind the scenes studio footage from episode 6 of "Fury from the Deep."

  • All of the episodes contained on this DVD have undergone the VidFIRE process.  VidFIRE is a process that returns the "video" look to the program as it was originally broadcast.  To learn more about this process you can read about it at the Doctor Who Restoration Team website.

  • Two other incomplete Troughton stories, "The Ice Warriors" and "The Invasion," were not included in this release as more than 50% of these stories still exist and would therefore warrant their own separate releases.

  • One of the all time classic fluffing of lines occurs in "The Wheel in Space" episode 6 when Troughton mistakenly says "sexual air supply" instead of "sectional air supply."  :)

  • Several noteworthy episodes are included here such as the introductory stories for companions Victoria and Zoe as well as the departure of Ben and Polly.

  • The actor playing Professor Travers in "The Abominable Snowmen" and "The Web of Fear" is, in real life, the father of actress Deborah Watling (Victoria).

  • Episode 3 of "The Enemy of the World" is the only existing episode left of this unique story.  It has Troughton playing both the hero (Doctor Who) and the villain (Salamander).

  • Episode 2 of "The Space Pirates" is the only existing episode from that story as well.  Not well remembered by fans, this episode plods slowly through the motions.  However, it is interesting to see Troughton's portrayal so near the end of his tenure.

  • Most of the clips included here on this DVD release exist ONLY because of the dedication of fans decades ago who made both film and audio recordings.  Also worthy of thanks are censors from Australia and New Zealand who trimmed many "violent" scenes out (and left the excised scenes intact).  Several of the other clips exist because they were used in other programs and it is those programs that still exist today.

  • Complete audio recordings of all of the "missing" Troughton stories either have been or shortly will be released.  The list is too long to include here, however, if you click on "MISSING AUDIOS" at the top of this webpage, you will see a complete list of available stories.

  • The "Lost In Time" collection was given the usual expert cleanup treatment by the Doctor Who Restoration Team.
