Never broadcast in the US, these episodes offer an enticing glimpse into ‘lost’ stories that have achieved legendary status. Fans can relish rare appearances of the Daleks as well as guest star turns by Julian Glover (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), Michael Gough (Batman) and Jean Marsh (Upstairs, Downstairs). New to video is Episode 2 of “The Daleks’ Master Plan,” the story that marked the series debut of Nicholas Courtney, who later returned time and again as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

Includes episodes from: The Crusade, The Daleks’ Master Plan and The Celestial Toymaker.

DVD Features
  • "The Daleks' Masterplan" Surviving Clips:

A collection of the existing clips from episodes 1, 3 and 4.  These clips exist due to their use in other programs discussing Doctor Who.

  • 8mm Off-Screen Footage:

Short clips taken by a fan who pointed his 8mm camera at the TV screen and filmed short segments.  Little did this person realize that one day his footage would be all that survived from several stories.  Clips include episodes 4 and 5 from "The Reign of Terror", episode 1 of "Galaxy 4," episodes 1, 2 and 4 of  "The Myth Makers," episode 4 of "The Savages" and episode 4 of "The Tenth Planet."  A nice glimpse into some key moments in the history of the series.  The footage is a bit on the fuzzy side, but very interesting from a fan point of view.

  • "The Tenth Planet" Surviving Clips:

Surviving clips from the last episode of "The Tenth Planet."  While the episode is missing, the final crucial moments of this episode still survive in the form of this clip.

  • "The Smugglers"

These clips come from 2 main sources.  The first set of clips exist only because they were removed by Australian censors before broadcast  In a strange twist of fate, the clips survived destruction even though multiple copies of the episodes themselves did not.  Clips from episode 1, 3 and 4 are presented.  The second set comes from 8mm color film shot on location during the filming of "The Smugglers."

  • Who's Who:
A feature unique to the North American DVD releases.  It lists short biographical information on many of the actors involved in the multiple stories presented here.

  • Complete Audio Soundtrack of episodes 2 & 4 of "The Crusade" :

While many episodes of Doctor Who were destroyed, audio recordings made during their original transmission have survived.  Presented here are the 2 "missing" episodes from "The Crusade." They are accessible from the episode selection menu and are also included in the "play all" selection.

  • "The Crusade" Narrative Links:

William Russell (Ian Chesterton) recorded linking material for the VHS release of "The Crusade" in 1999.  Unlike other attempts on previous releases where the actors described events, Russell performed in character as Ian Chesterton recalling his adventures with the Doctor.  Included are the links for episode 1, episode 3 and the end of the program.  Neat stuff!  The linking material is only accessible when the "play all" selection has been used.

  • Commentary:
Audio commentaries were recorded for the following episodes...

"The Crusade" episode 3 - Jullian Glover (King Richard).  Glover and Russell do a great job in this commentary.

"The Daleks' Masterplan" episode 2 - Peter Purves (Steven), Kevin Stoney (Mavic Chen), and Raymond P. Cusick (designer).  A very entertaining commentary.

Long time Who fan and producer of the Big Finish radio plays, Gary Russell serves as moderator for both episodes.

Additional Notes
  • Of particular note is the fact that this DVD title will see the release of the newly discovered episode 2 of "The Daleks' Masterplan" discovered earlier in the same year.  Held in a personal collection for decades, the owner was quite surprised to discover that the episode in question was NOT held by the BBC and was presumed lost.  He promptly returned the film.

  • Five years before the discovery of the second episode of "The Daleks' Masterplan" episode 1 of "The Crusade" was recovered (both in the month of January).  Again, the circumstances were similar in that a collector found, quite by accident, that they held a missing episode.  Shortly after its discovery, both of the surviving episodes from this story were release on VHS along with linking narration provided by William Russell (Ian).

  • The audio recordings of episodes 2 and 4 of "The Crusade" were included on a CD with the VHS release of this story.

  • All of the episodes (except for episode 1 of "The Crusade") contained on this DVD have undergone the VidFIRE process.  VidFIRE is a process that returns the "video" look to the program as it was originally broadcast.  To learn more about this process you can read about it at the Doctor Who Restoration Team website.

  • Episode 1 of "The Crusade" was NOT VidFIREd because of heavy damage to the film print.  This damage would have interfered with the VidFIRE process and ruined the effect.
  • William Hartnell is absent from much of "The Celestial Toymaker" as he was on an extended vacation during filming.  He was "written out" by having the Toymaker first making him invisible, and then later unable to speak.  He disappeared in episode 1 (sadly missing) and didn't reappear until the final episode (included in this DVD release).

  • Several other incomplete stories such as "The Reign of Terror" and "The Tenth Planet" were not included in this release as they have more than 50% of their episodes still remaining and would warrant their own separate release.

  • Most of the clips included here on this DVD release exist ONLY because of the dedication of fans decades ago who made both film and audio recordings.  Also worthy of thanks are censors from Australia and New Zealand who trimmed many "violent" scenes out (and left the excised scenes intact).  Several of the other clips exist because they were used in other programs and it is those programs that still exist today.

  • Complete audio recordings of "The Crusade," "The Daleks' Masterplan," and "The Celestial Toymaker" either have been or will shortly be released.

  • The "Lost In Time" collection was given the usual expert cleanup treatment by the Doctor Who Restoration Team.
