The Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, takes on "The Great Intelligence" in this exclusive audio recording taken from a "lost" television episode, with linking narration by Frazer Hines.

After narrowly avoiding being caught up in a web-like substance on its journey through space, the TARDIS arrives in the tunnels of the London Underground railway system, only to find that the web is also in the tunnels - as is the Great Intelligence's Yeti.

How has this happened?  The team learn that the impeding disaster was triggered nearly forty years before, after their previous encounter with the Intelligence.  Professor Travers accidentally reactivated a Yeti, thus giving the Intelligence the ammunition it needed to plan another invasion attempt.  The aim is simple: the Intelligence ants to drain the Doctor's mind.  Army forces, led by Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart, help the Doctor and his team race against time to stop them in their mission.  Can they make it?

The Web of Fear marks the first appearance of Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, a colonel in the British Army, but soon to be promoted to Brigadier of UNIT, who become one of the program's best-loved and most recognizable supporting characters.

Additional Notes
  • The Web of Fear is the second story to feature the Yeti (having first been introduced earlier in "The Abominable Snowmen" that same season).  It also has a return visit from the man who discovered the Yeti in the first place- Professor Travers (played by Deborah Watling's father).
  • This story also introduces an important and long lasting character to the world of Doctor Who, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (then a colonel).  They would meet one more time together before Troughton's regeneration in the Cyberman story "The Invasion."
  • This story is a precursor to the more Earth/U.N.I.T. based Pertwee stories that the series would soon shift to.

  • Recently, this story was packaged along with "The Abominable Snowmen" as part of box set called "Yeti Attack."  The version included in the box set is identical to the individual title and is still available separately.

MP3-CD Audio Release

  • An additional release of this story occurred recently.  This time the story is in mp3 (compressed audio) format.  Due to the compressed nature of the files, many more episodes can be included on a single disc.

  • These files can be accessed on most CD/DVD players as well as on computers.  Computer operating systems treat these discs as data CD's and can be played with any mp3 player loaded onto that computer.

  • Both "The Abominable Snowmen" and "The Web of Fear" (12 episodes in total) are included on a single disc.

  • These mp3 releases are marketed at a significantly reduced price compared to their standard audio CD counterparts.
