The Cybermen make their first ever appearance whilst William Hartnell's Doctor nears the end of his first incarnation in this classic soundtrack adventure whith linking narration by Anneke Wills.

"Millions of years ago there was a twin planet to Earth..."

The year is 1986, and at the South Pole the crew of the Snowcap Base have detected a new planet on their radar.  The arrival of the Doctor, Ben and Polly at the Base coincides with another landing - that of a spaceship whose humanoid passengers have used cybernetics to replace their limbs and vital organs.

The new arrival in the solar system is in fact a tenth planet, and Earth's twin.  Its return has brought with it the emotionless Cybermen, their sole aim to ensure the survival of their race.  To this end they plan to drain Earth's energy into the dying Mondas, whilst using the human population as fodder for a continuing programme of cyber-conversion.

Battling alongside the humans to save their planet, the Doctor appears to weaken and age before the eyes of his companions.  An ultimate collapse appears to signal his death - but then...

In an exclusive bonus interview, Anneke Wills - who also narrates the story's soundtrack - recalls her memories of making The Tenth Planet.

Additional Notes
  • "The Tenth Planet" is the final story of William Hartnell's tenure as Doctor Who.  The crucial last episode (where the Doctor undergoes his first regeneration) does not exist in the BBC vaults, although clips of the regeneration do.  Luckily, an off air recording does exist and is used in this release.

  • The linking narration is handled once again by Anneke Wills (Polly).

  • A bonus 10 minute interview with Anneke Wills is also included at the end of the second disc.

  • This story is also historic in that it introduces the Doctor's arch enemies, the Cybermen.  Like the Doctor himself, they look and sound much different from later incarnations.

  • Also listen for some truly painful (and comical) accents of Americans (do the Brits really think we sound like that?) and Italians.

  • The VHS release of this story has the entire final episode "reconstructed" using the off air audio recording along with stills and a few scant 8mm clips filmed by a fan.

  • This release is packaged as part of the "Cybermen" tin.  Included with "The Tenth Planet" is the 8 part epic Cybermen story ("The Invasion").

  • As a special bonus, an additional CD is included with the audio recordings of  "The Origins of the Cybermen" written and read by David Banks who played the Cyberleader throughout the 1980s.

  • The audio recording of this story was done separately by Graham Strong and David Holman using their own home audio equipment.

  • Mark Ayres, of the Doctor Who Restoration Team, did extensive work on this audio release by digitally remastering these recordings.
