The First Doctor becomes the Second in this exclusive recording of Doctor Who's original regeneration story, starring Patrick Troughton with linking narration by Anneke Wills.

"I've been renewed... without it I couldn't survive."

Before the astonished eyes of his companions Ben and Polly, the Doctor's whole body has apparently been transformed.  Now they are confronted by a stranger who claims to be their old friend - but how can they know whether to trust him?

The TARDIS's arrival on the swamp planet of Vulcan brings its own problems; the Doctor is mistaken for an official come to solve the Earth colony's in-fighting, and soon he and his companions are embroiled in political wranglings.  However, a far more serious threat lurks within the colony.  The scientist Lesterson has discovered a crashed space capsule, within it a group of inert metallic creatures which the Doctor identifies as Daleks.  Refusing to heed the Doctor's warnings, Lesterson supplies power to the Daleks and revives them.

The awakened Daleks claim to be faithful servants of humanity - but could such a thing ever be possible?  By covert means they seek an increasing level of energy, but for what?  By the time the Doctor and hsi friends discover the Daleks' true plan for the colony, it looks as if it might already be too late to stop them...

Anneke Wills, who plays Polly in the story, narrates this debut story for the second Doctor.  Patrick Troughton, first broadcast in 1966 and long since missing from the television archives.

Additional Notes
  • Well, here it is.  The first adventure for the Second Doctor (played by Patrick Troughton).  Considered a classic . . . and rightly so, this story quickly establishes Troughton in the lead role and breathed new life into the series.
  • Only scant 8mm clips exist from this story.  They were shot with a home camera by a devoted fan during the actual transmission.  Some clips are presented in VHS release of "The Missing Years."
  • The Daleks were chosen as the central villains of this story because it was felt that their popularity would guarantee good ratings during the transition between lead actors.
  • If the voice of Bragen sounds at all familiar then you may recognize him (actor Bernard Archard) from the classic Tom Baker story "Pyramids of Mars."
  • "Power of the Daleks" was originally released on audio tape in the early 80's with linking narration by Tom Baker (Doctor #4).  At that time the audio recordings held by the BBC were of low quality.  Subsequently, the original release is garbled and hard to listen to.  This release will utilize far superior audio recordings and more than likely newly recorded narration by another actor (due mainly to the fact that the original Baker narration recordings were never kept--ironic, eh?).
  • This release was part of a special anniversary "Dalek Tin."  In it you received both "The Power of the Daleks" as well as the top notch "Evil of the Daleks" plus a special bonus disc – My Life as a Dalek, presented by Mark Gatiss.  Only producing a limited number, this tin is now quite difficult (but not impossible) to come by.  Fortunately, the individual stories are still available.

  • The audio recording of this story was done by Graham Strong using his own home audio equipment.

  • Mark Ayres, of the Doctor Who Restoration Team, did extensive work on this audio release by digitally remastering these recordings.
